Moving Tips

Capitola Self Storage

10 things to do before your moving day!

1. Sort through your belongings

Sorting through your belongings will only make packing and moving easier because you may have things you no longer want. Donate the things you no longer want and start packing the rest.

2. Pickup Moving boxes

Purchasing moving boxes (and enough of them) is an important aspect to making your move run smoothly. We also recommend getting various size boxes for different types of belongings. Make sure to remember tape!

3. Purchase Packing Supplies

To ensure your belongings arrive safely at their new destination it’s important to pick up packing supplies, such as tape, cushioning material and labels. Remember to think about weight when selecting box sizes; small boxes for heavy items, big boxes for lighter things will save time as well as your back!

4. Reserve a Moving Truck

When thinking about how you’re going to move all your belongings, you first need to decide if you’re hiring professional movers or rent a truck and haul your things on your own. Once you’ve decided which option fits your needs best call around, get quotes and choose the best-suited option. Feel free to contact our staff for advice and recommendations for local movers and options.

5. Start Packing

Packing is not a task for the last minute, if you know in advance you’re moving, start by filling boxes with the things you won’t be needing before your move. Label every box so you know what’s where; doing this now will save you hours and headaches later.

6. Change your address (if applicable)

You can notify the post office in person or online, of your new address and schedule when new mail should be forwarded to that destination address. If you are storing items, remember to update your mailing address with the facility your storing with. Remember that storage facilities require signatures for address changes, but most will accept a mailed note or letter if signed.

7. Disconnect your Utilities

Informing your utility provider of the date of your move will ensure prompt disconnection of your services so you won’t continue to be charged. It’s important to take a picture of your meter incase any mishaps come about.

8. Set Up New Utilities

A week or so before moving set up your new utilities for a start service date in your new area.

9. Schedule Time off

If your move is going to take more than a weekend it’s best to schedule time off beforehand. You’ll feel less rushed, and a lot less stressed.

10. Put Together Moving Day Kit

A moving day kit can consist of the things you don’t want packed in a moving truck, a small bag or box that has all the moving day essentials…water, snacks, first aid supplies, change of clothes. No one wants to waste valuable moving time digging through boxes to find something that should have been left out!

11. Determine what size storage unit you require and make reservations

Go and visit a number of facilities before you commit to one. Storage Facilities are like Hotels; they range from cheap motels to high end resort motels. Take tours and talk with the staff, find the store that fits your wants and budget. The managers should work with you and determine which size storage you need, answer any questions or concerns, and help make a reservation for your move day.
